Every dog has different skin and coat needs, so no single shampoo is best for all of them. A shampoo that works for an adult Labrador may irritate a puppy or leave a Shih Tzu’s coat tangled. In this guide I compare 10 dog shampoos sold in India by who they suit, key ingredients, pros and cons.

Why the Right Dog Shampoo Is More Important Than You Think
Most pet parents in India grab the first dog shampoo they see at a local store or online marketplace—and that’s completely understandable. But here’s what many don’t realize: your dog’s skin pH is very different from yours. Human skin sits at a pH of around 5.5, while dogs have a more neutral pH of 6.5 to 7.5. Using the wrong dog shampoo—or worse, a human shampoo—can strip your pet’s natural oils, cause dryness and itching, and even lead to skin infections over time.
Here’s what the wrong choice can lead to:
- Dry, flaky skin that causes constant scratching
- Coat damage — dull, brittle, or frizzy fur
- Allergic reactions, especially in sensitive breeds
- Eye and ear irritation from harsh chemicals
India’s climate makes this even more critical. Whether you’re in humid Mumbai, dusty Delhi, or the moderate weather of Pune or Jaipur, your dog’s bathing needs vary by season and city. The best dog shampoo tailored to your pet’s coat type and your local climate isn’t a luxury. It’s basic care.
What Ingredients Make a Shampoo the Best Dog Shampoo?
Before we get into specific product recommendations, let’s build your buying checklist so you can buy the best dog shampoo. As a new pet parent, these are the non-negotiables:
✅ Ingredients to Look For
- Oatmeal or aloe vera—soothing, great for sensitive or itchy skin
- Neem or tea tree oil—natural anti-fungal and anti-tick properties (especially useful in Indian summers)
- Coconut oil—moisturizes and adds shine to the coat
- Vitamin E — supports healthy skin regeneration
🚫 Ingredients to Avoid
- Artificial fragrances can trigger allergies in sensitive dogs
- Parabens and sulfates—harsh chemicals that damage the coat over time
- Alcohol-based formulas—extremely drying for most breeds
- Permethrin—toxic to dogs if used incorrectly
Other Factors Worth Considering in the Best Dog Shampoo
- Coat type—Long-haired breeds like Golden Retrievers need moisturizing formulas; short-haired dogs like Beagles do fine with mild cleansing shampoos.
- Age—puppies need a tear-free, ultra-gentle dog shampoo formula.
- Skin condition—if your dog has a tick or fungal issue, a medicated dog shampoo is the best dog shampoo for him.
- Smell — dogs dislike strong perfumes; look for mild, natural scents.
- Price vs. quantity—a 500 ml bottle from a trusted brand usually offers better value than cheap, unknown alternatives.

Your dog doesn’t ask for much. A good shampoo is one of the easiest ways to say “I’ve got you.”
Safe for Puppies: Tear-Free, Gentle Formulas
The first bath you give your puppy is equal parts adorable and terrifying. They’re tiny, they’re slippery, and they look at you like you’ve personally betrayed them—and the last thing you want is a shampoo that stings their eyes or irritates their brand-new baby skin.
Here’s the thing most new pet parents don’t know: puppy skin is significantly thinner and more sensitive than adult dog skin. What feels “mild” to us can actually be way too harsh for a pup under a year old. This is exactly why picking the right best dog shampoo for your puppy isn’t something to leave to chance.
Two products that Indian puppy parents genuinely love—and for good reason:
1. Foodie Puppies Oh My Dog Detangling Shampoo
If your puppy is already rocking fluffy, tangled fur—congratulations, you have a handful! This shampoo was built for exactly that chaos.
Foodie Puppies is an Indian brand that really understands what our puppies need, especially in a climate that swings between dry winters and sticky monsoons. It cleans gently, detangles without pulling, and leaves the coat soft enough that brushing afterward doesn’t feel like a battle.
What makes it worth it:
- Tear-free formula — safe if it accidentally gets near the eyes during bath time
- Gentle detangling action reduces coat breakage in long-haired and fluffy breeds
- Free from sulfates and harsh chemicals — kind to delicate puppy skin
- Light, non-overpowering fragrance that fades naturally after drying
- Made in India — formulated keeping Indian weather and breed variety in mind
Best for: Fluffy breeds like Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso, Pomeranian puppies, and any pup with a coat that tangles faster than you can brush it.
2. Arm & Hammer Deodorizing Dog Shampoo for Smelly Dogs & Puppies
Let’s just say it—puppies can smell. A lot. Especially after rolling around, eating messily, or just existing enthusiastically. Arm & Hammer’s formula tackles that head-on while staying completely gentle on young skin.
You’ve probably had baking soda in your kitchen for years. Same science, now applied to your pup — and it genuinely works.
Why puppy parents keep rebuying it
- Baking soda–based deodorising formula neutralises odour instead of just covering it
- Ultra-gentle on sensitive puppy skin — no redness, no dryness after bathing
- Tear-free and safe for puppies alongside adult dogs — one bottle works for the whole household
- Leaves the coat noticeably fresh for days, not just hours
- Trusted international brand with thousands of verified reviews
Best for: Puppies and adult dogs who need serious odor control—especially active breeds or pups who think mud is a personality trait.
Honest tip: If you have both a puppy and an older dog at home, this is the best dog shampoo to buy once and use for both — saves money and shelf space.
Both shampoos are gentle, trusted, and available with fast delivery across India.

Your puppy’s first few baths shape how they feel about grooming forever—make them count.
Best for Long Coats: Conditioning Dog Shampoos
If you’ve ever owned a Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso, or Maltese, you know that bath time doesn’t end when the water stops running. The real challenge starts when it’s time to brush. One missed grooming session can turn a silky coat into a tangled mess. And if you’ve ever tried removing mats from a stubborn dog that would rather chase a squirrel than sit still, you know exactly what I’m talking about.
That’s why conditioning formulas are often considered the best dog shampoo option for long-haired breeds. They don’t just clean the coat—they help reduce tangles, make brushing easier, and keep fur looking soft between grooming sessions.
Two products that stand out in this category are Humane & Hound PawLish Professional Salon Series Dog Shampoo and Forbis Long Coat Aloe Shampoo.
1. Humane & Hound PawLish Professional Salon Series Dog Shampoo
This shampoo is designed for pet parents who want that freshly groomed, salon-style finish without booking an appointment every month. The formula focuses on cleaning and conditioning at the same time, which can be a huge time-saver if your dog has a thick or flowing coat.
Features You’ll Appreciate
- Professional salon-inspired formula
- Helps loosen knots and tangles
- Leaves the coat soft and manageable
- Supports a smoother brushing experience
- Suitable for routine grooming
- Helps maintain coat shine
What I like about shampoos like this is that they make the post-bath brushing process far less frustrating. Instead of fighting through every knot, the comb glides through more easily, which is better for both you and your dog, and that’s why it is the list of best dog shampoos for dogs.
2. Forbis Long Coat Aloe Shampoo – 750 ml
For dogs that need exis ona coat care, the aloe-enriched formula from Forbis is worth buying.
Long coats tend to become dry, especially after frequent baths. Aloe helps add moisture back into the coat while keeping it feeling soft and smooth.
Features you’ll be content with
- Aloe-based conditioning formula
- Designed specifically for long-haired breeds
- Helps reduce tangles and matting
- Gentle cleansing action
- Supports coat softness and hydration
- A large 750 ml bottle offers excellent value
Many owners choose this shampoo and accept the fact that it is the best dog shampoo because it helps maintain that fluffy, freshly groomed look without making the coat feel heavy.
Which One Is Right for Your Dog?
Both are the best in the dog shampoo category, but they serve slightly different needs.
- Choose Humane & Hound PawLish Professional Salon Series if you want salon-style grooming results and easier brushing.
- Choose Forbis Long Coat Aloe Shampoo if your dog’s coat needs extra moisture and conditioning support.
Long-haired dogs look beautiful, but their coats require consistent care. Using the best dog shampoo for long coats can reduce tangles, minimize breakage, and make grooming sessions much less stressful. Whether you choose Humane & Hound PawLish Professional Salon Series Dog Shampoo or Forbis Long Coat Aloe Shampoo, both products offer features that help keep long coats healthy, soft, and easier to manage.

Common Mistakes New Pet Parents Make When Buying Dog Shampoo
These are mistakes that come up time and again, especially for first-time dog owners in India:
- ❌ Using human shampoo—Even “natural” human shampoos are pH-wrong for dogs; avoid completely
- ❌ Buying based on fragrance—A strong floral scent means more artificial chemicals; pick mild over strong
- ❌ Ignoring the dog’s breed-specific needs—A Husky in Chennai and a Beagle in Shimla don’t need the same dog shampoo
- ❌ Not checking the expiry date—Especially on online purchases; expired dog shampoo loses efficacy and can irritate skin
- ❌ Over-bathing—More baths don’t mean a cleaner dog; it strips natural oils and leads to a dull coat
- ❌ Skipping the patch test—If you’re trying a new dog shampoo brand, apply a small amount on the belly area first and wait 24 hours before a full bath
Frequently Asked Questions About the Best Dog Shampoo in India
Can I use baby shampoo on my dog?
Not ideal. Baby shampoo is milder than adult human shampoo but still isn’t pH-balanced for dogs. Use a puppy-specific dog shampoo instead for the safest result.
Which dog shampoo is the best dog shampoo for Indian summers?
Look for a neem-based or anti-tick dog shampoo. Indian summers bring increased tick and flea activity, and neem is a proven, natural repellent that works well across all Indian climates.
Is medicated dog shampoo safe and the best dog shampoo for regular use?
Not usually. Medicated dog shampoos are formulated to treat a specific condition—like a fungal infection or severe dandruff. For regular baths, use a standard gentle formula and reserve the medicated one for when your vet recommends it.
Where can I buy the best dog shampoo in tier 2 cities?
Amazon and Flipkart deliver most top brands across India, including tier 2 cities. You can also check local pet stores or veterinary clinics—many carry quality dog shampoos and can give you personalized advice.
At what age can I start using dog shampoo on my puppy?
You can start gentle baths with puppy-safe dog shampoo from 8 weeks of age onward. Before that, a warm damp cloth wipe-down is enough.
How can I know which shampoo is the best dog shampoo for my dog?
The best dog shampoo depends on your dog’s specific needs, not just the brand name. Start by considering your dog’s skin type, coat type, age, and any existing skin issues.
Final Thoughts: A Clean Dog Is a Happy Dog
Choosing the right and best dog shampoo is one of the simplest yet most impactful things you can do for your pet’s health and happiness.
